7:30-8:00                 Registration

8:00- 1:00                Knowledge, Care and Patient Participation…A Winning Combination

Course Description:  Providing successful dental hygiene therapy today requires all of our focused attention and critical thinking skills. Understanding and applying knowledge of the inflammatory process will benefit the dental hygienist in the assessment and treatment of oral disease. Examination of oral risk factors, designing treatment options and recommendation of appropriate oral care products can result in improved oral health outcomes. Fulfilling the ultimate goal of dental hygiene therapy includes engaging the patient in the development of a prevention strategy to help ensure optimal oral health through personal ownership and responsibility. While clearly a challenging part of clinical practice, it is arguably the most rewarding. How can this best be achieved?

This workshop answers the following questions:

 • What is infection and inflammation and how do we incorporate this knowledge in patient care?

• What do we offer during an oral care visit (in addition to the obvious)?

• What communication skills do I really need and how can I best use them during an appointment?

• How can I present prevention strategies so that my patient becomes a partner in oral care?

• What is new in oral care products and how can I easily determine the validity of product claims?

• How can I match patient need with the most appropriate oral care regimen?
